Flesch Reading Ease

87Easy

Reads at roughly Grade 5 level -- a US school grade is the unit this formula was built to answer in.

Easy: this reads at roughly an easy conversational read level, which is comfortable for most website and marketing copy.

  • 28words
  • 2sentences
  • 14.0words a sentence
  • 1.25syllables a word

What moves the number

  • Sentence length, more than word choice. Splitting one 30-word sentence into two usually moves the score more than swapping a few words for simpler ones.
  • It counts syllables, not meaning. A short jargon word and a long plain one can score the same; read the advice line, not just the number.
  • There is no single right target. A landing page usually wants Standard or easier; a technical page for a specialist audience is allowed to sit lower.

Worth saying plainly

This scores sentences, not whether the copy sells

Short and simple is not automatically good copy, and a low score is not automatically bad -- some of the most persuasive writing uses longer, more considered sentences on purpose. This is one input to a copywriting decision, not the decision itself.

What the score is actually measuring

Sentence length moves it more than word choice does

  • It counts sentences, words and syllables, nothing else. No dictionary of difficulty, no AI judgement -- the same formula Microsoft Word has used for decades, which is why the number means something to people who have seen it before.
  • There is no universal target. Most web and marketing copy reads best in the Standard band or easier; a technical page written for specialists is allowed to sit lower.
  • A low score is a prompt to look, not a verdict. Some of the most persuasive writing uses longer sentences on purpose. Read the copy before you rewrite it to satisfy a number.

Bring the page that scored lower than you expected. We will tell you whether it is the sentences or the words, and whether it is even the problem worth fixing first.
