Asked of the registry, not guessed
Most free checkers look up whether a name has DNS records. That is not the same question: plenty of registered domains are parked with no records at all, so a name somebody already owns can look free. This asks each registry directly, through the protocol registries publish for exactly this purpose.
Where a registry does not answer, we say so instead of guessing. Nigeria’s does not currently publish a reliable lookup, so .ng and .com.ng are usually the two we confirm by hand. That is a real check by a person, not a brush-off.
A name is only yours once it is registered, and whatever we register for you is registered in your name with your email as the owner. Losing control of a domain is the most expensive thing that happens to a small business online, and it is entirely preventable at the start.
